Your Website… Your First Impression

Firstly, let’s not underestimate the importance of a quality business card design. In the past it was always the first impression. Face to face networking is still a valuable way to meet new clients and handing them a 1 colour business card that you printed off your home computer and cut out with scissors will definitely land you and your card in the trash, but that’s a blog for another time.

In the modern era of marketing your website design, in most cases, will be your businesses first impression, and as the saying goes:

“you only have one chance to make a first impression”

This saying is growing more and more true with the launch of Google Instant Preview, which in summary gives a user a screen shot of your website before entering the site itself.

So if I can I would like to update the saying to:

“you only have 5 seconds to make a first impression”

Here are things to keep in mind when designing your website and landing pages:

  1. Visual simplicity – don’t overwhelm the user with a ton of “flashy” graphics. Google Instant Preview does not recognize flash files.

  2. Message clarity – determine your message and present it clearly using targeted keywords. White space and font size & selection are two key points to focus on.

  3. Pride of ownership – don’t settle on poor design or shotty programming. Broken links, errors, and poorly thought out design techniques will immediately say to your potential customer that your website is unprofessional so you must be as well.
