Mac FTP Instructions
Using Fetch to FTP Files - Get Fetch! Click Here
What is Fetch?
Fetch is a Macintosh application that allows you to access a remote system (e.g. ftp.ravenshoegroup.com) over the Ethernet and transfer files between the remote system and your Macintosh. Fetch provides a standard Macintosh interface for FTP (File Transfer Protocol), and requires that you install an Ethernet card and MacTCP.
What is MacTCP?
MacTCP is Apple Computer’s TCP/IP driver. You need this driver to access the Ethernet cable that connects your Macintosh to the network. MacTCP allows you to communicate with users on other TCP/IP nodes and to use applications (e.g. telnet, FTP, lpr) to access other TCP/IP nodes. Because MacTCP is only a driver, you need applications to access the network.
How to Start an FTP Session
- To start an FTP session, double-click on the “Fetch 5.6” icon (the icon is a dog fetching a diskette).
Fetch displays a dialog window from which you can open a session. Certain fields, such as the default system dartvax.dartmouth.edu, are already filled in (Fetch was developed at Dartmouth, which is why it is the default host).
- The "Host Name" field is where you enter a qualified Internet host name - ftp.ravenshoegroup.com.
- Following the User ID: prompt, type your userid on the remote system. Ravenshoe's server does not allow anonymous FTP.
- You can leave the Directory field blank. You do not need to specify a directory name.
- Use the arrow next to Shortcuts to pull down a menu of shortcuts. When you select a shortcut, you will notice that certain fields are filled in. (Later in this document you will learn how to enter your own shortcuts.)
- After you fill in the required fields, press Enter or click on OK.
The message Connecting... followed by the message Getting file list... appears in the upper right hand corner of the screen under Status.
If any of the above steps takes more than a few seconds, a picture of a running dog appears on your screen. When the connection is complete, the central area on your screen will display a list of the files and sub directories in the current directory.
How to Navigate Directories
Use the scroll bar to scroll through the current directory. File icons are shown as a picture of a page, while directory icons are shown as a picture of a folder.
- To change the sub directory, double-click on a sub directory name or icon.
The messages Changing dir...,Getting dir name..., Getting file list..., and finally, connected appear in the upper right corner of the screen under Status. If it is a large directory, the screen displays a picture of a running dog while the file list is being updated.
- To return to the parent directory, pull down the arrow next to the current directory name (above the list) and select the directory.
How to Transfer Files
- To transfer a file to your Macintosh, double-click on the file.
A dialog box appears on your screen. If you have not set a download folder in Preferences, which is an option under the Edit menu, select a location on the Mac where you want to save the file. In Automatic mode, Fetch will determine if it is a binary or text file and will automatically decode Binhex files.
- To override Automatic mode, click the radio button to select text or binary.
If you have problems downloading a file, try downloading it in text mode.
- To transfer a group of files to your Macintosh, single click on the first and last file in the group. These files, and all the files between them, are highlighted.
- To transfer the files, single-click on the Get File... button.
While the file(s) is being transferred, a picture of a running dog appears on your screen. The screen also displays the file name, the file type, the size of the file in bytes, the number of bytes transferred, and the rate of transfer.
- To transfer a file from your Macintosh, single-click on the Put File... button.
A dialog box appears that allows you to to select the file you want to transfer.
Note: You may need to change the directory name in the dialog box to find your file. A picture of a running dog and information about the transfer appears on your screen during the transfer.
How to Enter Your Own Shortcuts
- To enter your own shortcuts, pull down the Customize menu and select Edit Shortcuts...
A dialog box, with a list of the current shortcuts, appears on your screen. To add a new shortcut, single-click on the New button.
A dialog box, similar to the Open Connection dialog box, appears on the screen.
- Use the Tab key or the mouse to move around the different fields. Press Enter or click on the OK button to enter a shortcut.
The Shortcut: field can be the same as the Host: (e.g. ftp.ravenshoegroup.com), or it can be a reminder of what is available at the site (e.g. Anti-virus software). The Host: field should contain a system name, for example, ftp.ravenshoegroup.com. Any field you leave blank, for example, the User ID: or Password: must be filled in when you use the shortcut.
Do not enter the password for shortcuts that are not Anonymous FTP. If you do, anyone using your machine will be able to use the shortcut to FTP to the account.
How to Change the Default Host
- To change the default host (dartvax.dartmouth.edu) select Edit Shortcuts...from the Customize menu.
- Single-click on a shortcut; then single-click the Make Default button.
A check-mark appears beside the new default. Now when you start Fetch, the dialog box displays the new default host.
Getting Help
The Fetch manual comes with the program and is available while running Fetch. To access the Fetch information, pull down the Windows menu and select Fetch Help. A window containing two boxes with scroll-bars appears on your screen. The box on the left displays the table of contents. Click on a topic to display help information for that topic. The help information will appear in the box on the right of your screen.
